§ 101160 Transit District General Manager

Before a transit district starts running buses or trains, the board can choose to hire a general manager, but they don't have to. If they do hire one, the board can fire them whenever they want.

Key Takeaways

  • •The board may appoint a general manager before the transit service has been running for six months.
  • •Hiring a general manager is optional; the board can also choose not to hire one.
  • •If a manager is hired, they serve at the pleasure of the majority of the board, meaning they can be removed at any time.

Example

A new city bus system is being set up. The board decides to hire a general manager during the planning stage, before any buses have run for six months.

Because the board is still in the first six months of operating the bus service, they are allowed to appoint a general manager, but they could also decide not to. Once hired, the manager can be removed at any time by a majority of the board.
