§ 66 Board Member Veteran Requirements

This law requires board members to be veterans, with one required to be a retired U.S. service member and another to live in a California veterans home, but it allows anyone who doesn't meet these rules to keep serving for the rest of their term.

Key Takeaways

  • •Board members must be veterans.
  • •One member must be a retired U.S. military service member.
  • •One member must reside in a California veterans home.
  • •Not meeting these requirements does not prevent a member from completing their existing term.

Example

A city planning board that decides on new park projects must have members who are veterans; one of them must be a retired soldier and another must live in a California veterans home.

Even if a current board member isn’t a veteran or doesn’t live in a veterans home, they can still finish their term because the law only blocks new appointments that don’t meet the rules.
