§ 1192 Memorial District Special Tax

This law lets a district add a tiny extra tax (up to $0.003 for every $1 of property value) to pay its running costs and future projects, and also lets it borrow money and later tax again to pay back that loan.

Key Takeaways

  • •The district can only charge up to $0.003 for each $1 of property value.
  • •The tax can’t be higher than what’s needed to cover next year’s operating costs plus the next two years’ big‑ticket projects.
  • •If the district borrows money, it can add another special tax to pay back the loan’s principal and interest.

Example

A town wants to fix its park and needs money for the next two years. It can charge each homeowner an extra 0.3 cent per dollar of their house’s assessed value to cover those costs.

The town adds the special tax to the regular property tax bill. The money goes into a special fund that pays for park repairs and other district expenses.

How to Calculate

Special Tax = Assessed Valuation × $0.003 per $1

  1. Find the assessed value of the property (the amount the government says the property is worth).
  2. Multiply that value by 0.003 (which is the same as three‑tenths of one cent per dollar).
  3. The result is the amount of the special tax you owe for that year.

A house is assessed at $250,000.

Result: $250,000 × 0.003 = $750 special tax for the year
