§ 50760 Local Housing Inspection Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The government can check the buildings, equipment, and records of rental housing projects that get help from this law.
  • •They can do this before, during, or after the buildings are made.
  • •If people live there, the government must follow the rules in Section 1954 of the Civil Code before entering their home.
  • •The government can also make sure the housing is kept in good shape and order fixes if needed to keep people safe.

Example

Imagine the government helped pay for a big apartment building to be built. One day, they hear that the building has some problems, like broken stairs or mold.

The government can go into the building to check what’s wrong, even look at the records of how the building was made or fixed. If they find problems, they can tell the owner to fix them to keep the people living there safe. But if they need to go into someone’s apartment, they have to follow the rules, like giving notice first.
