§ 50737 Affordable Housing Funding Priorities

Key Takeaways

  • •The government gives money to build cheap rental homes for people with low or medium income.
  • •They prefer projects that cost less, use energy-saving designs, and fit with local housing plans.
  • •Projects that get extra help (like money, land, or services) or use federal funds get priority.
  • •They like projects that build the most homes with the money available.
  • •If possible, they prefer homes near public transit, but this doesn’t apply in rural areas.

Example

A city wants to build new apartments for families who don’t earn much money.

The government will give money to this project if the apartments are cheap to build, save energy, and fit with the city’s plan to help low-income families. If the city already has land or extra money for the project, it has a better chance of getting funds.
