§ 50465 Flood Protection Building Standards

Key Takeaways

  • •The law says California must update building rules for areas that might flood badly (more than 3 feet deep in a 200-year flood).
  • •The new rules must help keep people and buildings safer from flood damage.
  • •The water department had to work with other groups (like fire and building experts) to make these rules by 2009.

Example

If you build a house in a place that could flood, like near a big river in California.

The law makes sure your house is built stronger so it doesn’t get ruined if a huge flood happens. Like making the house higher or using waterproof materials.

The amendments to the California Building Standards Code shall be sufficient to reduce the risk of flood damage and to protect life, safety, and the construction in those areas. (b) Before the department proposes the amendments to the California Building Standards Code required pursuant to subdivision (a), the department shall consult with the Central Valley Flood Protection Board, the Division of the State Architect, and the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
