§ 43650 Vehicle Emission Control Devices

Key Takeaways

  • •All cars made in 1955 or later must have a special device that the DMV says they need.
  • •The DMV has a list of these devices in their rulebook, which might get updated over time.
  • •If the local rules change, the DMV’s list might change too.

Example

You buy an old car from 1960 and want to drive it.

Before you can drive it, you have to make sure it has the special device the DMV says it needs, like a smog pump or catalytic converter. If it doesn’t have it, you can’t legally drive it until you add it.
