§ 43210 Assembly Line Emission Testing

Key Takeaways

  • •The state checks cars on the factory line to make sure they don’t pollute too much.
  • •If a car fails the first test, it can be tested again using the same rules it was originally approved with.
  • •If the car passes either test, it can be sold in California.
  • •Big groups of similar cars might get fewer tests if the first few pass.

Example

A car company makes 1,000 of the same model car.

The state tests a few of them. If those pass the pollution test, the rest don’t all need to be tested. If one fails, it can be tested again the same way it was before. If it passes the second test, the car can still be sold in California.

(c)  The regulations adopted by the state board pursuant to subdivision (a) shall provide for reduced, statistically valid testing of motor vehicles contained in large engine families and for which initial test results indicate compliance with the applicable standards.
