§ 42402 Environmental Violation Penalties

Key Takeaways

  • •If you break air pollution rules, you can be fined up to $5,000.
  • •For some serious violations, the fine can go up to $10,000.
  • •If your pollution hurts a lot of people, the fine can be as high as $15,000.
  • •Every day you keep breaking the rules counts as a new offense, so fines can add up fast.

Example

A factory keeps releasing dark smoke into the air even after being told to stop.

The factory can be fined $5,000 for breaking the rules. If they keep doing it for 3 days, they could be fined $15,000 total because each day counts as a new offense.
