§ 33811 Local Agency Debt Repayment

Key Takeaways

  • •The law says the state needs more money to pay back what it owes.
  • •If the state doesn't get more money, it might not pay back loans or break promises.
  • •If the state doesn't pay back loans, it could hurt its ability to borrow money in the future.

Example

Imagine you borrowed money from a friend to buy a bike.

If you don't pay your friend back, they might not lend you money again. The same thing can happen to the state if it doesn't pay back its loans.

§ 33811 Local Agency Debt Repayment

The Legislature further finds and declares that unless supplemental sources of revenue for the payment of such indebtedness can be established, a substantial portion of such indebtedness will not be repaid, which will include the default of bonds and the breach of contractual obligations, and that if such defaults and breaches of contract occur, the credit and future borrowing capacity of both local agencies and the state may be impaired.
