§ 13217 Highrise Fire Safety Inspections

Key Takeaways

  • •Fire departments can check tall buildings every year to make sure they follow fire safety rules.
  • •If the local fire department doesn't do the check, they must tell the State Fire Marshal by June 30, and the State will do it instead.
  • •The owner of the tall building may have to pay a fee for the inspection to cover the cost.

Example

A 20-story apartment building in a big city.

The city fire department checks the building every year to make sure it has working fire alarms, safe exits, and other fire safety things. If the fire department doesn't do the check, they tell the State Fire Marshal, who then sends someone to do it. The building owner has to pay for this check to make sure everything is safe.

If the local fire department or district providing fire protection services elects not to conduct an inspection, the local fire department or district shall notify, by June 30 of each year, the State Fire Marshal of this election. If the State Fire Marshal receives this notification, the State Fire Marshal shall conduct the inspection.
