§ 13202 Existing Facility Safety Exemption

Key Takeaways

  • •Old buildings don't have to follow the newest fire safety rules if they were built before the rules existed.
  • •The people in charge (like fire inspectors) can decide if the old building is still safe enough.
  • •If the old building is deemed safe, it doesn’t need expensive upgrades to meet the latest standards.

Example

A school built in 1960 doesn’t have the newest fire alarms or sprinklers required for schools built today.

If the fire inspector checks the school and thinks it’s still safe for kids, the school doesn’t have to install the newest fire safety equipment right away.
