§ 127435 Hospital Discount Charity Policies

Key Takeaways

  • •Hospitals must share their rules about discounts, free care, and how they collect money with the state. They have to do this every two years or if they change their rules.
  • •The state checks if the hospital's rules follow the law. They do this by January 1, 2023, and whenever the hospital changes its rules.
  • •If a patient should get help paying their bill based on the rules posted online when they got their first bill, the hospital can't say no later.

Example

You go to the hospital and get a big bill. You remember seeing on the state's website that the hospital gives discounts to people who make less than $50,000 a year. You make $45,000.

The hospital must give you the discount because that was their rule when you got your first bill. They can't change their mind later.
