§ 120261 Source Patient Physician Definitions

Key Takeaways

  • •This law defines who is considered an 'exposed individual'—like doctors, nurses, firefighters, or volunteers who come into contact with blood or bodily fluids at work.
  • •It explains what a 'source patient' is—the person whose blood or bodily fluids might have caused the exposure.
  • •The law lists what counts as a 'significant exposure'—direct contact with blood or fluids that could spread diseases like HIV or hepatitis.
  • •It says what 'communicable disease' means—any sickness that can be passed through the exposure, as decided by a doctor.

Example

A nurse gets pricked by a needle while drawing blood from a patient.

The nurse is the 'exposed individual' because she came into contact with the patient’s blood at work. The patient is the 'source patient.' If the needle had blood on it, this could be a 'significant exposure,' and the nurse’s doctor would check if any diseases could have been passed.
