Key Takeaways

  • •You need a license to can food, and it costs $50 per plant every year.
  • •You can't sell or give your license to someone else.
  • •You must have the right equipment, like a pressure cooker with thermometers, to safely can food.
  • •You must follow health rules. If you break them, the department will tell you in writing, and you have 60 days to fix it before your license expires.

Example

If you want to start a small business canning and selling homemade jam, you need to get a license.

You have to pay $50 for each place where you make the jam. You also need the right tools, like a special cooker to make sure the jam is safe to eat. If your kitchen isn’t clean enough, the health department will tell you what’s wrong, and you’ll have 60 days to clean it up or you might lose your license.
