§ 11154 Unlawful Controlled Substance Dispensing

Key Takeaways

  • •Doctors can only give medicine to patients they are treating for a real health problem, not just because someone is addicted.
  • •It's illegal to ask or pressure a doctor to give medicine to someone who doesn't need it for a real health issue.
  • •This rule is about making sure medicine is only used to help people get better, not to feed an addiction.

Example

A person asks their doctor for strong painkillers even though they don't have any pain.

The doctor can't give the painkillers just because the person wants them. The doctor can only prescribe them if the person has a real health problem that needs them. If the person keeps asking or pressuring the doctor, they could be breaking the law.
