§ 102905 American Indian Death Rate Study

This law requires the Rural Health Division to run a three‑year study to get better statistics on death rates, including the top 10 causes of death, for American Indians living in 37 specific rural counties.

Key Takeaways

  • •The study must last three years.
  • •It focuses on 37 rural counties listed in the law.
  • •The Indian community, clinics, tribes, and tribal health groups must be involved.
  • •The study will look for ways to improve state death‑record data and will train morticians and coroners.

Example

A tribal health clinic in Fresno County works with the state to collect information on how many people die from heart disease each year.

The clinic helps the state gather accurate numbers, so the study can show the true heart‑disease death rate for American Indians in that county.

(c)  This study shall identify methods to improve the quality of official state data on Indian mortality and carry out activities to achieve that goal, including the provision of training and the development of educational materials for morticians and coroners operating within the state.
