§ 6941 District Budget Tax Levy

Each year, the school district must send the county board a written estimate of how much money it will need for the next year, and the county board then taxes property in the district to raise that amount.

Key Takeaways

  • •The district must give a written money estimate before the county’s budget meeting each year.
  • •The county board has to approve the estimate before any tax can be added.
  • •A special tax is placed on all taxable property inside the district to raise the exact amount the district needs.

Example

A school district tells the county it needs $5 million for teachers, books, and building repairs next year.

The county board looks at the estimate, approves it, and then adds a special property tax on all homes and businesses inside the district so the needed $5 million can be collected.
