§ 512 Sheriff Handling Abandoned Wrecks

This law says the sheriff can take and keep any broken or abandoned property when no one comes forward to claim it, and have its value figured out by neutral people.

Key Takeaways

  • •The sheriff steps in when no owner appears for wrecked property.
  • •The property’s value must be appraised by people who have no interest in it.
  • •The sheriff must keep the property safe until the owner makes a claim.

Example

A car crashes on a highway and the driver drives away, leaving the wrecked car behind.

Because no one shows up to say the car is theirs, the sheriff will take the car, have an unbiased appraiser decide how much it’s worth, and store it safely until the real owner comes forward to claim it.
