§ 8614 Local Emergency Authority Limits

Key Takeaways

  • •Everyone in the government, like police, fire departments, and city workers, must help the Governor and the Director of Emergency Services during big emergencies.
  • •If a city or county leader has special powers during an emergency, they still have to follow the Governor’s rules if the Governor steps in.
  • •Local rules (like city laws) stay in place during an emergency unless the Governor says otherwise.

Example

A big earthquake hits a city, and the mayor tells people to stay home. But the Governor says everyone must go to a safe shelter instead.

The mayor’s rule is replaced by the Governor’s rule because the Governor has the final say in big emergencies.
