§ 6311 Genocide Survivors Memorial Approval

Key Takeaways

  • •California wants to build a memorial for genocide survivors in the Capitol area, but they need approval first.
  • •They can't start building until the Capitol Park plan is approved, unless they get special permission after January 1, 2021.
  • •The money for the memorial must come from private donations, not taxpayers.
  • •The memorial must be safe, follow disability laws, and not harm the environment.

Example

A group wants to build a statue in a park to honor people who survived a terrible event.

They have to ask the government for permission, make sure the park rules allow it, and raise money from donations. They also have to check that the statue is safe for everyone, including people with disabilities, and won’t hurt the park.

(c) Funds for the construction of the memorial shall be provided through private contributions. The commission may receive contributions for this purpose. (d) The department, in consultation with the International Genocide Memorial Commission, shall seek to accomplish the following goals: (1) Review the preliminary design plans to identify potential maintenance concerns.
