Key Takeaways

  • •The board sets rules for how much departments must pay into the fund to keep it financially healthy.
  • •Any money paid into the fund earns interest every year, calculated on June 30.
  • •Personal information shared with the board is kept private and can only be seen by the person it belongs to or their boss.
  • •Everyone in the program must give the board the information they ask for.

Example

A firefighter department pays money into a fund for their volunteers' benefits.

The board decides how much the department must pay each year to make sure there’s enough money for benefits. The money grows with interest every June 30, and the firefighters' personal details are kept secret unless they or their boss ask to see them.
