§ 50305 Tenant Purchase Right Notice

Key Takeaways

  • •If a local government wants to sell or rent out a property, they must first offer it to any tenant who has lived or used it for at least 2 years in the last 3 years.
  • •The tenant gets a fair price and a reasonable amount of time to decide if they want to buy or rent it.
  • •This rule does not apply to government employees who live or use the property.

Example

Imagine you've been renting a small shop from the city for the past 3 years to run your bakery. The city decides to sell the building.

The city must first offer to sell the shop to you at a fair price and give you enough time to decide if you want to buy it, because you've been a tenant there for more than 2 years.
