§ 43720 City Debt Refinancing Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •Cities can pay off old debts by getting new loans or bonds.
  • •This only works if the city or a city department already owes money (like bonds, notes, or court judgments).
  • •The old debt must have been for something the city could legally borrow money for.

Example

A city took out a loan 10 years ago to fix old roads. Now, they want to pay it off with a new loan to get better interest rates.

The city can do this because the old loan was for fixing roads, which is something they’re allowed to borrow money for.
