§ 31812 Member Contribution Adjustments

Key Takeaways

  • •Most workers pay into their retirement fund, but they get a small discount on the first part of their paycheck.
  • •The discount is bigger for newer workers (after 1979) than for older ones.
  • •Some workers, like safety officers in certain counties, don’t get the discount and pay the full amount.
  • •If your county has a special rule for safety workers, they pay the full amount no matter what.

Example

If you work for the county and get paid $2,000 a month, part of your paycheck goes to your retirement fund.

The law says you don’t have to pay the full amount on the first $350 (or $1,050 if you started after 1979). You get a small break on that part, but you still pay the rest. If you’re a firefighter or police officer in some counties, you don’t get the break and pay the full amount on your whole paycheck.
