§ 31523 Retirement Board Vacancy Elections

Key Takeaways

  • •If a spot opens up on the retirement board, they must hold an election to fill it as soon as possible.
  • •If there's less than six months left in the term, they can hold one election to fill the rest of the current term and the next term.
  • •If only one person is running for the open spot, no election is needed, and that person automatically gets the job.
  • •The person who wins the election or is appointed will serve until the current term ends.

Example

Imagine a member of the retirement board quits halfway through their term.

The board must quickly set up an election to find someone new to take over the empty spot. If only one person signs up to run, they get the job without an election.
