§ 31003 County Employee Insurance Benefits

Key Takeaways

  • •The county can offer insurance (like life and disability) to doctors, nurses, and other workers in county places like hospitals or health departments.
  • •The county can pay for all or part of the insurance cost, using money from the general fund or the salary fund.
  • •If the county doesn’t pay the full cost, they can take a little bit out of the worker’s paycheck to cover the rest.

Example

A nurse working at a county hospital gets sick and can’t work for a few months.

The county had set up disability insurance for her, so she still gets some money while she’s sick. The county paid most of the insurance cost, and a small amount was taken from her paycheck each month.

The board of supervisors may adopt a system of insurance for the benefit of physicians, nurses, and any or all other persons employed in county institutions or county health departments. It may procure life and disability insurance for the benefit of such employees from any admitted insurer and pay the whole or any part of the premiums upon such insurance from the general fund or the salary fund, as part of the compensation of the employees. The board may deduct from the compensation of such employees and apply to the payment of the premiums that part thereof determined by it to be payable by the employees.
