§ 29602 County Jail Rehabilitative Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •The county pays for food, housing, and programs (like job training) for people in jail who are waiting for trial or serving time.
  • •The county can also get money back from a prisoner's private health insurance if they need medical care in jail.
  • •If the prisoner has their own health insurance, the county can bill the insurance company for their medical costs.

Example

John is in county jail waiting for his trial. He gets sick and needs to see a doctor.

The county will pay for John's doctor visit, but if John has his own health insurance, the county can ask his insurance to pay instead.
