§ 26971 County Finance Director Appointment

Key Takeaways

  • •If most voters agree, the county can switch from electing a finance boss to picking one.
  • •The current finance person (county auditor) gets the job first if this change happens.
  • •After that, the county leaders (board of supervisors) pick the finance boss based on who is best for the job, following fair hiring rules.
  • •The finance boss can be fired or suspended if they do something really bad, following the same fair rules.

Example

A county holds a vote, and most people say they want the county leaders to pick the finance boss instead of voting for one.

The current finance person (county auditor) automatically becomes the new finance boss. Later, when they leave, the county leaders will pick the next boss based on who is best for the job, not because of who they know. If the new boss does something really bad, like stealing money, they can be fired following the fair rules.
