§ 26605 Sheriff'S Jail Authority

Key Takeaways

  • •The sheriff is usually in charge of the county jail and all the prisoners in it.
  • •This includes people who broke the rules of their post-release supervision and were sent back to jail.
  • •If a county has a special rule saying someone else runs the work furlough program, the sheriff isn’t in charge of that.

Example

John was released from jail but had to follow rules like checking in with an officer. He didn’t follow the rules, so he was sent back to jail.

The sheriff is the one who will be in charge of John while he’s in jail, not anyone else.
