§ 22890 Employee Health Benefit Costs

Key Takeaways

  • •Both the employer and the worker (or retired worker) must pay part of the cost for health insurance.
  • •If more than one retired worker is getting money as a survivor of the same person, the employer only pays one share for all of them.
  • •The worker or retired worker pays whatever is left after the employer pays their part.
  • •The employer starts paying their part as soon as the worker or retired worker signs up for the health plan.

Example

A retired teacher and their spouse both get health insurance from the teacher's old job.

The school (employer) pays part of the health insurance cost, but only one share, even though both the teacher and their spouse are using it. The teacher and spouse pay the rest of the cost themselves.
