§ 21380 Early Retirement Pension Reduction

Key Takeaways

  • •If a safety worker retires before age 55 (or 60 for some jobs), their pension gets cut.
  • •The cut is based on how much the pension would be worth if they waited until 55 (or 60).
  • •They use old math rules from 1970 to figure out the new, smaller pension amount.
  • •This only applies to certain state safety workers, like wardens or forestry members.

Example

A firefighter retires at 50 instead of waiting until 55.

Because they retired early, their pension gets reduced. The state calculates how much smaller it should be using old math tables from 1970 to make sure it’s fair based on how long they might live.
