Key Takeaways

  • •If you get disability retirement money and then go back to work for the state, your disability payments stop.
  • •You become a member of the retirement system again, like you were before.
  • •The money you already put into the system before retiring gets added back to your account, but not more than what you originally put in.
  • •You get credit for the time you worked before, just like you never left.

Example

Imagine you were a teacher and got hurt, so you started getting disability money. Later, you feel better and go back to teaching at a public school.

Your disability payments will stop as soon as you start working again. The money you paid into the retirement system before will be put back into your account, and you’ll start building up your retirement savings again, just like before you retired.
