§ 20937 Prior Service Credit Benefits

Key Takeaways

  • •This law is about giving credit for work done before joining a retirement plan.
  • •The credit is based on a percentage of your final salary when you retire.
  • •The percentage can't be higher than what you get for your current work.
  • •The rules are the same for everyone in the same group (like police or office workers).

Example

A police officer worked for 5 years at another job before joining the current police department.

The police officer can get credit for those 5 years when calculating retirement benefits, but the percentage used for those years can't be higher than the percentage used for the years worked at the current job.
