§ 20069 State Employee Service Definition

Key Takeaways

  • •State service means working for the state, universities, schools, or certain agencies and getting paid for it.
  • •If you work for a county and your pay counts as part of the state retirement system, that work also counts as state service.
  • •If you're in the California National Guard and you chose to join the state retirement system, your paid service there counts as state service too (but not for health or dental benefits).

Example

A person works as a teacher at a public school in California.

Since the teacher is working for a school employer and getting paid, their time teaching counts as state service. This means they can get retirement benefits from the state.
