§ 20034 Retirement Compensation Calculation

Key Takeaways

  • •If you work for the university and are part of their retirement plan, the highest average pay you got in any 12 or 36 months in a row is what they use to figure out your retirement money.
  • •This only works if you retire from both the university's retirement plan and this system at the same time.
  • •They look at your pay during the best 12 or 36 months, not just your last few years.

Example

A teacher works at the university for 20 years and is part of their retirement plan. In the last 3 years, she got paid $60,000, $65,000, and $70,000. But 5 years ago, she had 3 years in a row where she made $75,000, $80,000, and $85,000.

When she retires, the university will use the $75,000, $80,000, and $85,000 to calculate her retirement money because that was her highest average pay over 36 months.
