§ 17579 State Mandate Reimbursement Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •If a new law makes the state or local government do more work or spend more money, the law must say who will pay for it.
  • •The law must either promise to pay the government back or explain why it won’t.
  • •This rule helps make sure new laws don’t surprise anyone with extra costs.

Example

The government passes a law saying all schools must teach a new class about robots.

The law must say if the state will give schools money to pay for the new class or explain why schools have to pay for it themselves.
