§ 17565 State Mandate Cost Reimbursement

• •If a city or school spends money on something that later becomes a state rule, the state has to pay them back.
• •The state only pays for costs after the rule becomes official.
• •This is optional for cities and schools—they don’t have to follow the rule if they don’t want to.

A school buys new safety locks for doors because they think it’s a good idea. Later, the state makes a law saying all schools must have these locks.

The state has to pay the school back for the locks they bought after the law was made.
