§ 17303 Payment Of Registered Demands

Key Takeaways

  • •When the state gets paid for notes (like IOUs), the Treasurer tells the Controller there's money to pay back what was borrowed.
  • •The Controller can then write checks to pay off those debts using money set aside by the government.
  • •Once the debt is fully paid, the record of that debt is erased.

Example

Imagine you borrow money from a friend and write them an IOU. Later, you get your allowance and can pay them back.

You tell your friend you have the money (like the Treasurer telling the Controller). Your friend then takes the money and tears up the IOU (like canceling the debt record).

Upon the payment in full of the notes representing the registered demand or demands, or the portion of the demand or demands as set forth in Section 17302, the appropriate portion of the registered demand or demands shall be canceled. (Amended by Stats. 2009, 3rd Ex. Sess., Ch. 9, Sec. 10. Effective February 20, 2009.)
