§ 16800 Existing State Bond Provisions

Key Takeaways

  • •This law is about old rules for selling state bonds (like borrowing money for big projects) that were removed from the Constitution in 1962.
  • •The old rules were kept as regular laws so people can still look them up easily.
  • •Some of these bonds (money borrowed) still haven’t been fully paid back.
  • •The law doesn’t change anything—it just moves the old rules to a new place for reference.

Example

Imagine your town borrowed money to build a school 60 years ago and is still paying it back.

This law keeps the old rules for paying back that money in a book where people can find them, even though they’re no longer in the big rulebook (Constitution).

§ 16800 Existing State Bond Provisions

In 1962 the electorate repealed Sections 2, 3, 4, 41/2, 5, 6, 8, 81/2, 15, 16, 16.5, 17, 18, 19, 19.5, 20, and 21 of Article XVI of the Constitution and continued such provisions as statutes. Such provisions authorized the issuance of certain state bonds which have been issued and many of which are not yet fully retired. The provisions, authorizing the issuance of state bonds which have not yet been fully retired, have been codified in this chapter without change in order that the provisions will be available in the Government Code for ready reference by interested persons and no substantive change in the law is intended by the Legislature. (Amended by Stats. 1971, Ch. 438.)
