§ 16415 Federal Flood Control Funds

Key Takeaways

  • •If the U.S. government gets money from land used for flood control in California, some of that money goes back to California.
  • •California puts this money into a special fund called the 'U.S. Flood Control Receipts Fund'.
  • •The money from this fund is given to the counties where the flood control land is located.
  • •Each county gets a share of the money based on how much of the flood control land is in that county.

Example

Imagine the U.S. government sells some land in California that was used for flood control and makes $1,000,000. The government decides to give 50% of that money back to California.

California gets $500,000 and puts it into the special fund. If there are two counties with flood control land, and one county has 70% of the land while the other has 30%, the first county gets $350,000 and the second county gets $150,000.
