§ 12903 Civil Rights Council Composition

Key Takeaways

  • •There is a group called the Civil Rights Council with 7 members. The Governor picks them, and the Senate agrees.
  • •The Governor picks one member to be the leader, called the chairperson.
  • •The boss of the Civil Rights Department is also part of the group but doesn't get to vote.
  • •Some members serve for 4 years, some for 2 years. After that, all new members serve for 4 years.
  • •If someone leaves early, the Governor picks a new person to finish their time.

Example

Imagine your school has a club with 7 kids. The principal picks who gets to be in the club, and the teachers agree. The principal also picks one kid to be the leader. The teacher in charge of the club is also in the club but doesn't get to vote on club decisions.

This is like the Civil Rights Council. The Governor is like the principal, the Senate is like the teachers, and the club is like the council. The teacher in charge is like the Director of the Civil Rights Department.
