§ 12582 Charitable Trust Trustee Definition

Key Takeaways

  • •A trustee is someone or a group that holds property for a good cause, like helping people or animals.
  • •It can be a person, a company, or even a group that takes care of money or things for charity.
  • •The trustee must use the property only for the special charity purpose it was given for, not for anything else.
  • •The trustee can be chosen by the person who gave the property or by the trustee themselves.

Example

A rich person gives a big house to a group to turn it into a shelter for homeless dogs.

The group is now the trustee. They must use the house only for the dog shelter, not to sell it or use it for something else. If they don’t, they’re breaking the rules.
