§ 1127 Off-Duty Public Employee Work

Key Takeaways

  • •Public employees (like police officers, firefighters, or forestry workers) can work extra jobs in their field when they're off duty.
  • •They need permission from their boss at their main job before taking the extra work.
  • •The extra job must be similar to what they already do (like a cop doing security work).
  • •Their agency must say they're qualified for the extra job.

Example

A firefighter wants to work part-time as a safety inspector for a construction company on his days off.

He can do this only if his fire chief says it's okay and confirms he's qualified. The job must be related to firefighting, like checking fire safety.
