§ 5606 Savings Account Insurance Requirement

Key Takeaways

  • •Banks must get insurance from the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) before they can operate in the state.
  • •This rule also applies to banks from other countries that want to do business in the state.
  • •The state can enforce rules made by the FDIC or other federal agencies to make sure banks follow them.

Example

A new bank wants to open branches in the state.

Before the bank can start taking people's money, it must get insurance from the FDIC. This insurance protects people's savings if the bank has problems. If the bank doesn't get this insurance, the state can stop it from opening.
