§ 382 Fingerprint Background Checks

Key Takeaways

  • •If you want to work or volunteer in certain government jobs, you must give your fingerprints.
  • •The government checks your fingerprints to see if you have a criminal record or arrests that could affect your job.
  • •If you have a crime in your past that relates to the job (like lying or stealing), you might not get hired.
  • •The government can keep checking if you get arrested later while you're working or volunteering.

Example

Someone applies to work in a police station as a clerk.

They must give their fingerprints so the police can check if they have any crimes like theft or lying in their past. If they do, they might not get the job because those crimes relate to handling important police records.
