§ 1425 Customer Funds Availability Period

This law says banks must let customers use the money they deposit within a reasonable time. The bank can't make you wait forever to use your own money.

Key Takeaways

  • •Banks have to let you use your deposited money within a reasonable time.
  • •The time they take depends on how long it takes to process and transport the check.
  • •The bank can't take longer than the fastest way to send the check between banks.

Example

You deposit a check into your bank account on Monday.

The bank must let you use that money soon, like in a few days. They can't make you wait weeks just because they feel like it.
