§ 9029 Anchored Fishing Line Rules

Key Takeaways

  • •You can use a fishing line tied to the ocean floor and a boat or buoy in certain areas (Districts 6, 7, 10, 17, 18, and 19).
  • •You can't use this line to catch certain big fish like mako sharks, thresher sharks, swordfish, or marlin.
  • •The fishing line can't be longer than 3,000 feet from the anchor to the boat or buoy.
  • •No hooks are allowed on the top one-third of the line.
  • •If you use a buoy, it must show your fishing license number in big, clear numbers (at least 2 inches high).

Example

A fisherman in District 10 wants to use a long fishing line tied to the ocean floor and attached to his boat.

He can do this, but he must make sure the line is not longer than 3,000 feet. He also can't use it to catch swordfish, and he must ensure there are no hooks on the top one-third of the line. If he uses a buoy, he needs to write his fishing license number on it in big numbers.
