§ 7073 Fishery Management Plan Requirements

Key Takeaways

  • •The state must create a big plan (called a 'master plan') to manage fishing in California's ocean waters.
  • •The plan must list all the types of fishing, decide which ones need new rules first, and explain how they will study and track fish.
  • •The plan must be made with help from fishermen, scientists, and others who care about the ocean.
  • •The plan can be updated later if needed, and the public gets to give their opinion before it’s approved.

Example

Imagine fishermen are catching too many lobsters, and the lobster population is dropping.

The state would put lobster fishing high on the priority list in the master plan. They would work with fishermen and scientists to make new rules, like limiting how many lobsters can be caught, to protect them. The public would get to share their thoughts before the new rules are approved.
