§ 9306 Parental Rights Termination After Adoption

Key Takeaways

  • •When a child is adopted, their birth parents usually don't have to take care of them or make decisions for them anymore.
  • •If a step-parent adopts an adult, the birth parent who is married to the step-parent keeps all their rights and duties.
  • •An adult who is being adopted can choose to keep their birth parents' rights and duties by signing a paper before the adoption is final.

Example

A 25-year-old is adopted by their step-dad.

If the step-dad is married to the birth mom, the birth mom keeps all her rights and duties. The 25-year-old can also choose to keep their other birth parent's rights by signing a paper before the adoption is done.
